Two thousand years ago, some unknown Greek sculptor carved a headless winged goddess out of marble, stuck her on a ship's prow, and called her Victory. She has been holding that pose ever since. Mid-march. Wings out. One leg forward. About to absolutely handle something.
In 2016 I stood in front of her at the Louvre and basically lost my mind. Here was this woman made of stone, no head, no arms, no face, and yet somehow all I could feel was her attitude. She walks into a room like she has never been told no. She walks into a room like Charlie's Angels down a hallway in slow motion. I wanted to paint that energy, but I wanted to paint her my way, which is to say extremely loud and deeply neon.
Goddess Mode is what I made. An 8x8 gouache painting on a cradled birch panel, hand-painted in neon orange and hot pink against a bright electric lime green that will absolutely refuse to be ignored on your wall. The drapery of her robe becomes ribbons of flame. Her wing is up. She is about to march somewhere and the entire room already knows it.
