What Is Claude Cowork? A Beginner's Guide to Getting Set Up
Share
If you've been using AI like a very smart pen pal, typing questions and getting instructions back, you are missing the coolest part. Claude Cowork is the part where the AI stops telling you how to do the thing and just does the thing.
I'm Mandi Loomis. I spent 21 years at a software company translating nerd to normal, and I used nothing but ChatGPT for three years while swearing up and down I would never switch. Then I tried Cowork in February. After an hour I was freaking out about how much it could do for me, and I've been living in it ever since.
This post covers the first two episodes of my Claude Cowork for beginners series on The Mandi Channel: what Cowork actually is, and how to get it set up without a nerd degree. Watch them here, or keep reading for the whole thing in one place.
What is Claude Cowork?
Claude Cowork is the part of the Claude desktop app that does tasks for you, working in your real files, email and calendar instead of handing you directions.
It came out at the beginning of 2026, and I am still shocked at how many people have never heard of it. Most of us learned AI as a chat window: you ask, it answers, you go do the work. Cowork flips that. You describe the job, point it at the stuff it needs, and it goes and does the job while you watch.
That's why I started calling it Hot Intern Bot™, because I can hand it something and walk away. Plus, it's a joke I've been making since college: every time I feel overwhelmed, I shout, "I NEED AN INTERN!" When I started figuring out how much I could hand over to Claude, I felt like I finally got my wish.

What's the difference between Claude Chat and Claude Cowork?
Chat tells you how to do something. Cowork does it for you. Chat answers questions in a window, while Cowork opens your files and finishes the task.
Here's the story that made it click for me. Back when I only used Chat, if I needed help with a spreadsheet, I'd have Chat open on one side of my screen and the spreadsheet on the other. Then I'd spend two hours clicking, cussing and following the twenty million steps it gave me.
With Cowork, I tell it where the spreadsheet is saved and what I need, and he does the whole freaking thing. Meanwhile I am over here eating snacks, watching him work.
My goal is simple. Less clicking. Less cussing. More snacks.

What can Claude Cowork actually do in real life?
Cowork handles everyday adulting: finding things buried in your email, filling a shopping cart, summarizing courses you never finished and sorting a giant to-do list.
Everybody on the internet is teaching AI for work. I use it for work too, but my favorite game is figuring out which stupid adulting chores I can hand over next. A few of our greatest hits:
- The Christmas list. "Find the email where my sister told me what her kids want for Christmas, and put that stuff in my Amazon cart."
- The course I paid for and never finished. "Read this online course and tell me what I actually need to know."
- The to-do list from hell. "Look at my 269 Google Tasks and tell me what I actually need to do today."
- The spreadsheet. Created, edited and formatted, while I do literally anything else. (I could never figure out pivot tables, and now I never have to, because he does them for me.)
After I figured out what I could get it to do, I went from thinking "AI is pretty cool" to "HOLY CRAP. WE HAVE ENTERED THE JETSONS." My life has seriously changed.

What do you need to use Claude Cowork?
- The Claude desktop app. You need your desktop to install Cowork and connect it to all of your goodies, like your email, calendar and files. A question I've been getting a lot lately is whether you can use Cowork on your phone. Once that setup is done, you can do a lot of stuff from your phone, but there are some things that still work better on the desktop.
- A paid Claude plan. So yes, you have to be a bit of a sugar mama. But for around twenty dollars a month, this kept man is totally worth it.
Then you just choose Cowork when you start a task. That is how you go from "Can you tell me how to do this?" to "Can you just freaking do it for me?"
How do you set up Claude Cowork?
Go to hotbutlerbot.com and download the free setup guide. It has links and steps with pictures to show you exactly how to get it set up on your desktop.
You'll grab two files there: the setup guide and the Butler plugin file. If you'd rather watch it happen, Episode 2 walks through the whole thing on screen.
What is a Claude plugin?
A Claude plugin is a set of instructions that teaches Claude to do something a certain way, like the handbook a new employee reads before their first shift.
You install it once, and from then on Claude knows the job. The Butler's job is getting your Cowork setup right. My other bots each have their own job, like listing and protecting artwork. You'll hear me call the whole crew the bot squad.
Why use the Hot Butler Bot to set up Cowork?
The free Hot Butler Bot™ walks you through Cowork setup inside Cowork itself, with marked-up screenshots, so the right settings actually get turned on.
This is where you get to play. No more videos to watch, no documents to read. You just talk to him, back and forth. He hands you pictures with arrows showing exactly where to click, you follow the picture, type done, and he moves you along to the next thing.
Along the way he helps you pick the settings that let Cowork do everything you want it to do. That part matters more than people think. If you don't turn on the right things, it's like hiring an employee and letting him sit in the corner scrolling on his phone.
You're too fab for that.
I spent months figuring out which switches and settings actually matter, so you don't have to. When the Butler is finished, you haven't just installed Cowork. You've set it up to do something useful. And I'm giving him away free, because I want everyone to feel that Jetsons moment.

What's next in the Claude Cowork beginner series?
The series continues with connectors for Gmail, Google Drive and Calendar, then scheduled tasks, then one delegated adulting chore at a time.
Connectors are where your AI assistant starts getting considerably more useful, because that's how Cowork gets permission to reach your inbox and your calendar. Then scheduled tasks, which is how I wake up to my whole day already sorted.
If you're wondering why I'm so good at this: 21 years at a software company taught me how to figure out what a system can do, and a theater degree plus a lifelong love of Carol Burnett and Saturday Night Live taught me it doesn't have to be boring.

Tell me in the comments which chore you want to hand over first.
